Contents Insurance
Protects your belongings inside the home against theft, damage and loss.
How it works
We talk through what's in your home and what matters most to you
We tailor cover to your belongings and your budget
We put your policy in place, so your possessions are properly protected
Contents insurance covers your personal belongings inside your home — furniture, electronics, clothing and other possessions — against events like theft, fire, flood and accidental damage, depending on the level of cover you choose.
Unlike buildings insurance, contents insurance is optional rather than a mortgage requirement, though most homeowners (and many renters) choose to have it given how costly it can be to replace a home's contents after a burglary or fire.
Good if you…
- You want your belongings covered against theft, fire or accidental damage
- You're moving into a new home and want to protect what you're bringing with you
- You own higher-value items like jewellery or electronics that need specifying separately
- You're renting and want cover, since your landlord's insurance won't cover your possessions
Typically covers
- Your furniture, electronics, clothing and general possessions inside the home
- Options for accidental damage cover, not just theft or fire
- Cover for items temporarily taken outside the home, with "personal possessions" add-ons
- Specified higher-value items like jewellery, art or bikes, if declared separately
Worth knowing
- Standard policies often cap the amount paid for any single high-value item unless it's specified separately
- Many insurers now offer "blanket" cover with one overall sum insured, rather than asking you to value everything item by item — though some policies still work the traditional way, so it's worth checking which type you have
- It's optional, not a mortgage requirement — but worth genuinely weighing up the cost of replacing everything you own
- Cover can usually be bundled with buildings insurance for convenience, or bought separately
Common questions
No — only buildings insurance is typically required by lenders. Contents insurance is optional, though most people choose to have it given the cost of replacing belongings after a theft or fire.
