Family Income Benefit
A regular, tax-free income that replaces your salary for your family — designed to sit alongside life cover, not replace it.
How it works
We meet to talk through what matters most to you and your family
We tailor a plan that replaces your income, at a cost that fits your budget
We place it in trust, so your family receives ongoing support quickly and reliably
Family Income Benefit is designed to replace the salary your family would lose, paying out as a regular income — for example £1,500 a month — for the remainder of the policy term, rather than a single lump sum. It's particularly suited to families with children, helping cover everyday costs like bills and childcare if you're no longer there to provide for them.
Most people take it out on top of life cover, not instead of it — life cover can clear the mortgage or other debts, while Family Income Benefit specifically replaces the ongoing income your family relied on. You can also tailor the term to suit your family, for example running until your children finish university, rather than a fixed round number of years.
Good if you…
- You have children you want to help provide for, even if the worst happened
- You want to replace your salary specifically, to cover everyday costs like bills and childcare
- You'd like the term to match your family's needs — for example, until your children finish university
- You already have, or are considering, life cover and want to add income replacement alongside it
Typically covers
- A regular, tax-free income paid to your family for the remainder of the policy term
- A term you can tailor to your family's circumstances — for example, until your children are grown up
- Cover that can be written in trust, so it's paid out promptly and outside your estate
- Options to receive the remaining benefit as a discounted lump sum instead, with many policies
Worth knowing
- The total amount paid out is highest if you die early in the term, and reduces the closer to the end of the term a claim happens
- Like life cover, there's no payout and no cash-in value if you don't claim during the term
- Most people take this out alongside life cover, not instead of it — the two are designed to work together
- As with all protection, premiums depend on your age, health and lifestyle at application
Common questions
Standard life cover pays a lump sum, often used to clear a mortgage or other debts. Family Income Benefit instead pays a regular income, designed specifically to replace a lost salary — most families take out the two together rather than choosing one over the other.
